Who is Eligible?

The 9(f) visa is strictly for academic purposes. To qualify, an applicant must be:

Higher Education

Enrolled in a course higher than high school (College, Masters, or Doctorate) at an accredited HEI.

Age Requirement

At least 18 years of age at the time of enrollment. Younger students usually require an SSP.

Able to prove sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and accommodation for the duration of study.

Required Documents

Most of these documents must be submitted to your school's International Student Office first.

🏫

Notice of Acceptance (NOA)

An official letter from a CHED-accredited school with a dry seal. This is the "Golden Ticket" for your application.

📜

Scholastic Records

Your Transcript of Records (TOR) and Diploma from your previous school, duly **Apostilled** in your home country.

👮

Police & Medical Clearances

Apostilled Police Clearance from your home country and a Medical Certificate (including X-ray and lab tests) from a Bureau of Quarantine-accredited clinic.

The Application Process

1

School Admission

Apply to your chosen university. Once accepted, the school will issue your NOA and endorse your application to the DFA or Bureau of Immigration.

2

Visa Conversion or Issuance

If already in PH, you apply for Conversion at the BI. If abroad, you apply at a PH Consulate after they receive DFA authorization.

3

I-Card & Registration

Once approved, you must register for your ACR I-Card. This serves as your primary ID and re-entry permit while you are a student.

⚠️ 9(f) Visa vs. Special Study Permit (SSP)

Don't confuse the two! A 9(f) Student Visa is a full immigration status for degree-seekers 18+. An SSP is a permit added to a Tourist Visa for those under 18 or those taking short-term courses (like ESL or flight training) for less than one year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work part-time on a 9(f) visa?

No. Foreign students are generally prohibited from engaging in gainful employment. However, certain on-campus internships required by your degree may be permitted.

What happens if I fail my classes?

To renew your 9(f) visa annually, you must provide a Transcript of Records showing satisfactory progress. Failing multiple classes may result in the school refusing to endorse your visa renewal.
